Networking Leads to HR Career Success

I hated networking. As an introvert, just the thought of being around people I didn’t know was terrifying. However, with encouragement from one of my professors to step outside of my comfort zone, I began attending events for a SHRM chapter in my area every month. Little did I know that these seemingly simple actions would have a profound impact on my career trajectory. When I sought to transition into the HR profession upon graduation and attended an interview, the interviewer was someone I had previously met through those networking events! It turned out that my participation in these gatherings had made a lasting impression, leading to my eventual hiring. This revelation not only validated the importance of networking but also opened up a world of opportunities that have shaped my successful career in a field I am passionate about. Through these opportunities, I not only secured my first job in HR but also found mentors who have guided me along my professional journey, providing invaluable insights and support. This experience didn’t help me to find a job; it helped me find a career that I love!

Freelance Network Boosts Business Amidst PandemicDuring COVID-19, many businesses struggled to stay open due to declining revenue. But mine more than doubled. I was fortunate, but now I had a new challenge: finding a way to satisfy the demand. A few weeks before COVID-19, I attended a freelance writing conference as a panelist and met with dozens of talented freelancers. These were some of the same people I called upon when I needed to share the workload. Since I was familiar with their work, it was easy to onboard them with my clients and processes. As a result, I was able to continue saying yes to clients, generating more revenue, and expanding my reputation. My network helped me grow at a time when many businesses and creators struggled.

Legal Networking for Mentorship and Client Growth

As M. Denzell Moton, Esq., my legal career, focusing on personal injury and business litigation, has significantly benefited from networking. Throughout my journey, from obtaining my B.S. in Business Administration to my legal practice today, networking has not just been about building a professional contact list; it has been a vital source of learning, mentorship, and opportunity. In the nascent stages of my career, a chance meeting with a seasoned attorney at a legal conference translated into a mentorship that profoundly shaped my approach to litigation and client relationships. This mentor not only provided guidance but also introduced me to a network of legal professionals who further broadened my outlook on the legal field. These connections have been instrumental in staying updated on the latest legal trends, strategies, and technologies, enhancing my ability to provide innovative solutions to my clients.Another tangible benefit of networking came when I was working to establish my practice. Through a series of connections, I was introduced to a group of business owners who eventually became some of my first clients. This not only helped in growing my legal practice but also in understanding the real-world implications of law on businesses, enriching my expertise in business litigation. Networking, thus, has not only facilitated my professional growth but also enabled me to aid thousands of clients more effectively. Through each connection and conversation, I’ve gained invaluable insights that have honed my skills and expanded my understanding of both law and business.

Real-Estate Networking Yields Lucrative Partnership

A chance meeting at a real-estate conference led to a partnership that significantly expanded our property portfolio. This connection not only brought in lucrative deals but also opened doors to invaluable industry insights and trends, further sharpening my market acumen. It taught me that beyond just transactions, building relationships can foster growth and opportunities that are not always immediately apparent. Networking, in essence, has been a cornerstone of not just career growth but also in understanding the deeper nuances of the real-estate market.

Support System Enhances Industry-Specific Growth

Networking has provided me with a support system of like-minded professionals who understand the challenges of my particular industry. I have found that sharing experiences and seeking advice from this network can be invaluable during challenging times. Networking, in general, often involves regular communication and interaction with professionals in various settings. Engaging in conversations, presenting ideas, and sharing experiences contributes to the development of communication and interpersonal skills, which in turn helps boost your confidence—an essential characteristic of career growth. Networking also has allowed me to showcase my skills, achievements, and unique value proposition. Anyone who chooses to build upon these connections and find support will encounter positive interactions that make it easier to build a strong personal brand, which contributes to your professional reputation and career growth.

Proactive Networking Secures Executive Search Role

Networking has been a game-changer for me in advancing my career, especially in landing my current role as a consultant at an executive search firm specializing in data-center hiring.Early in my career as a business development executive at a data-center publishing firm, I made it a priority to actively build my network. I researched industry leaders, connected with colleagues’ contacts within the data-center space, and reached out to a co-host of a prominent data-center podcast seeking mentorship.Little did I know, this coffee chat would eventually lead to a significant career opportunity. When the time felt right for a career shift, I reached out to him about the possibility of joining his team. This proactive step ultimately led to my transition to the executive search firm.Networking not only opened doors but also helped me discover talents I never knew I had, shaping the path I’m on now.

Bar Associations Amplify Legal Career and Advocacy

Networking has played a critical role in my career evolution and the growth of my practice, particularly in the areas of technology adoption and women’s advocacy within the legal industry. One vivid example of how networking has significantly impacted my career trajectory is through my involvement with various bar associations, including the Colorado Women’s Bar Association and the Larimer County Women’s Bar Association. Through these platforms, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with other female attorneys and leaders within the legal profession, which has not only enriched my professional development but also amplified my efforts in advocating for women’s equality and inclusion in the legal field. These professional networks have provided a forum for sharing experiences, challenges, and strategies for overcoming barriers, leading to stronger advocacy for gender equality and fostering a supportive community. Furthermore, my engagement with technology in legal practice, as exemplified in my contributions to the Colorado Bar Association’s Solo Small Firm Section, has been significantly influenced by my connections in the legal tech community. These relationships have been instrumental in keeping me abreast of the latest technologies that can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of my practice, such as cloud computing and virtual law practice platforms. Moreover, my networking experience has taught me the importance of mentorship, particularly for women in the legal profession. By connecting with more experienced female attorneys, I have gained invaluable insights and advice that have shaped my approach to criminal defense and legal technology. These mentors have also opened doors to speaking opportunities, teaching engagements, and guest appearances on legal podcasts, further expanding my professional network and establishing my expertise in criminal defense and legal technology. The collective wisdom and support gained through these networks have not only fueled my growth as an attorney but have also allowed me to contribute more meaningfully to the legal community and beyond.
