Before I begin this recap, I feel I would be remiss in not wishing you a very Happy Valentine’s Day … and, more importantly this year, a Happy Centennial Birthday as Arizona celebrates 100 years as a state. As I look around the desert, I see how far we have come from the days of covered wagons, pioneers’ cattle drives and a relentless frontier; for today it is iPads, energy renewal and sipping lattes at a local coffee bar. Arizona has its’ share of challenges, but Career Connectors fits into their timeline by helping people connect with the careers of their future!
Have you received your hug today? Have you taken care of YOUR needs? Have you defined, refined and recorded not just your goals, but your vision? Today, Feb 14 (or whatever day you happen to read this), begin to chart your course for your career success…whatever that looks like to you!
Kristi Staab, of Promote Yourself Back to Work, shared her insights geared toward helping you get and stay on track. As she celebrates her 3-year anniversary since being laid off, she reminded us of the importance of nurturing yourself. This involves 4 basic needs we all have:
- The need to be attended to
- The need to be heard
- The need for mutual respect in relationships
- The need to be touched
Her statistics say that we need a daily dosage of 4 hugs just for survival, 8 per day for maintenance and 12 a day for personal growth. The one good thing about a hug….a hug always fits just right – and is FREE.
On a more practical note, however, is the need to set your goals and set them in motion. Set a remarkable vision for yourself that includes:
- Your Career
- Your Finances
- And your relationships
Picture something for yourself or your career. Decide if this is a 365-day goal or a 90-day goal. Either one is fine but be clear and specific about what you want. This means, as Kristi illustrated, that if you were to order your dream online and had it delivered by FedEx to your doorstep, would it be exactly what you had pictured when you ordered it?
Also, focus on what you want in life…not on the things you don’t want. Write it down (Editor’s note: draw a picture of it, if it helps). Only 10% of Americans write their goals down. By writing yours down, you will have set yourself ahead of the 90% that don’t.
Break this goal down to bite-sized chunks. If you set 3 goals per day for 5 days per week, you would reach 780 goals for one year.
She asked us what holds us back. Audience responses: “unclear,” “fuzzy,” “busy assessing myself,” “fear of success or failure,” “don’t know where to begin.” Sound familiar? Decide on ONE (1) thing you want to put into place by Friday…THIS Friday. That is MY challenge for you today.
Lastly, share them – your goals, that is. People tend not to reach their goals if they don’t share them. Crumb, email ME if nothing else. I would love to know what they are.
Thanks, Kristi, for the encouragement.

Happy Valentine, my friend….and raise your copper cup of iced tea in celebration of 100 years as the USA’s 48th state… Ditat Deus.
PS….Jessica received a star. No, not a gold star for her forehead for being a star student….a BIG RED STAR for being our fairy godmother. “Jessica is our fairy godmother,” said Socorro Luna, “getting us ready for the ‘Job Ball.’ She has taught us the proper handshake, how to twitter, and presented us with people to help us. She is dressing us for the job.” She adds, “[Jessica,] I present you with a star that sparkles, twinkles and tweets. When you wish upon this star, you are connecting real people with real careers.” Happy Valentine’s Day, Jessica and Sandi. (note: a second star for equal reasons was presented to Sandi who is presently flying back from vacation in Hawaii)
